The Erongo Mountains in Namibia have so much to offer! Starting with the geology of the former volcano, the exquisite landscape with its indigenous mammals and birdlife as well as the plentiful ancient rock paintings and engravings which are estimated to be as old as two thousand years.

The Erongo Mountains are set in a semi-arid climate and the average rainfall is 200mm per year. Although it is next to the oldest desert in the world, the Mountains create a very diverse array of plant, reptile, mammal and bird species, some endemic to Namibia.

Notable Wildlife in our Sanctuary includes amongst many others Black Rhino, Giraffe, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Black-Faced Impala, Kudu, Oryx, Springbok, Klipspringer, Duiker, Steenbok, Damara Dik-Dik, Warthog, Leopard, Cheetah, Caracals, African Wild Cat,  Brown Hyena, Aardwolf, Bat-Eared Foxes, Cape Fox, Aardvark, Pangolin, and the near endemic Black Mongoose.

The Erongo Mountain are of course also home to a large variety of reptilian species, including for example Angolan Dwarf Python as well as Rock Python, different Agama and Gecko species and many more.

Amongst the over 200 varieties of bird species recorded here (some as seasonal migrants) we have many raptors like Verreaux (Black) Eagle or the Booted eagle (possible nesting sites), Vultures, Hawks, Falcons, Buzzards, Kestrels and a variety of Owls from the small African Scops Owl to the big Verreaux's Eagle Owl.

At least seven Namibian (near-)endemic bird species occur in an around the Erongo Mountains, including the Hartlaub’s Spurfowl, Damara & Monteiro Hornbill, Herero Chat, Carp’s Tit, Rock Runner, White-tailed Shrike and Rüppell’s Parrot.
